Why should Christians care about the environment?
In Genesis, we read that all creation belongs to God, who made it, called it very good and entrusted it to the care of humankind. The psalmist reiterates, declaring “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it...” In his letter to the Colossians, Paul proclaims that through Jesus’ blood on the cross, God has reconciled to Himself all things on earth and in heaven. There is no doubt: God cares for all His creation. And as God’s people, we are to care and to act--with gratitude and hope. It is an inescapable part of our responsibility. We care about the environment, quite simply, because it belongs to the one whom we call Lord.
Sadly, that understanding has gone missing among many of us. As a result of sin and the failure to fulfill our biblical responsibility, in Romans we read what our eyes confirm daily: creation groans.
As Christians, we must respond.
